Chris was born and raised in the Bay Area.  His love for dogs was apparent from an early age.  His family’s first dog, Bon Bon, a little black terrier mix, changed his parents’ perception of dogs, and changed Chris’ life forever.  As her main caretaker, trainer, and playmate, Chris grew extremely attached to Bon Bon, and her passing hit him hard.  He knew in his heart that it wouldn’t be long before another dog came into his life.

Chris and h
is then girlfriend, now wife, Ann, moved to New York, where Ann attended nursing school.  While in New York, Senshi, a stubborn, comical, and extremely energetic American Bulldog came into their lives.  Senshi taught them the meaning of patience.  Raising an 80+ lb. puppy in a one bedroom New York apartment is a trying experience, to say the least.  Several obedience classes, daily trips to the dog park, and many failed potty training attempts later, Senshi grew into her skin, and Chris and Ann grew to love her crazy bulldog antics.  It was in New York that Chris was first
introduced to the concept of dog daycare.  Senshi regularly attended daycare, and Chris and Ann were grateful for the socialization she received, and even more so for the fact that she came home a tired and happy dog.

A cross-country road trip (with Senshi in tow) brought Chris and Ann back home to the Bay Area.  It wasn’t long before Chris tired of corporate life, and decided it was time for his career path to take a drastic turn (for the better).  His love for animals drew him towards animal welfare.  He was given the opportunity to become a dog trainer at a local animal
shelter.  As a dog trainer, Chris trained shelter dogs in basic obedience, temperament tested potential adoption candidates, and counseled adopters interested in bringing a shelter dog into their life.  Enter Cosmo, a goofy, all white Pit Bull, with a penchant for grinning (that’s right, he actually grins, baring teeth is not always an aggressive display).  Cosmo was required to spend two weeks in a foster home, which Chris was more than happy to provide.  Cosmo never made it back to the shelter.  He had found a permanent home with Ann, Chris, and Senshi.

Fully intending on stopping at two dogs, Chris and Ann remained blissfully unaware that this would soon change.  Ann’s parents moved out of the country, and their Miniature Dachshund, Kiki, unfortunately could not go with them.  Chris and Ann did not skip a beat, and gladly accepted Kiki into their home.

Chris and Ann’s love for animals does not stop at dogs.  They have also fostered kittens, an
d they have been adopted by a stray grey tabby cat named Skittles.  Skittles literally showed up on their doorstep, and after unsuccessfully trying to locate her home, they welcomed her into theirs.

Sara McCullough, Facility Manager

Sara has been working with animals for over 11 years.  She worked for a mobile vaccination clinic as a vet assistant, and then later as regional manager.  She moved on to work for a local animal shelter with Chris where she trained and evaluated shelter dogs.  She also taught the shelter's puppy preschool, basic obedience, and small dog obedience classes.  She is owned by her dog Jimmy, an Akita/Golden Retriever mix, and Rascal, an orange tabby cat.

Alex Darabian, Dog playgroup manager

Alex is an animal lover through and through.  He has worked for several animal shelters, as well as a number of vet offices.  He’s done everything from cat and kitten adoption counseling to caring for the city’s stray and abandoned animals.  When you’re surrounded by needy animals every day, it’s only a matter of time before your work starts to come home with you.  Alex is no exception.  His family includes Coconut, a black and white cat, Snow, an all white cat who is blind in one eye, Sampson, a three-legged cat, Sonic, a fiesty Rat Terrier, and Maple, an easy-going Cattle Dog mix.  All of his animals are adopted, and they’re all thoroughly spoiled :)

Marthina mcclay, Trainer

Marthina first learned to ride horses when she was 11 years old.  At 14 she was training horses for Pole Bending and Barrel Racing.  In 1975 she learned dog training the traditional way when her family owned Dobermans.  She soon learned about positive reinforcement training and felt that this was a much better training technique.  She went on to pursue other careers but always lived with dogs and continued to train on the side.  She became interested specifically in the Pit Bull breed in 2003.  She had already begun training, studying and working with dog to dog aggression issues. Soon after that she started rescuing/fostering Pit Bulls on her own in her home along with her resident Pit Bulls and thus Our Pack was born, a rescue, training and education organization. Her work has included large scale animal abuse cases that have occurred around the country, including the Michael Vick case.  Many of these dogs are now certified therapy dogs, including Leo, the court jester in the picture above.  Her specialty is dogs that have leash reactivity and dog aggression issues.

Julie Carey, Senior Dog Playgroup counselor

Julie has always been an animal lover as long as she can remember.  She was always begging for a pet of her own.  Her lifelong dream of owning a dog came true in 1999 with the arrival of an 8-week old female Golden Retriever she named Cleopatra (Cleo for short).  Julie has over 3 years of experience working at doggie daycare & boarding facilities.  On her days off she enjoys volunteering at the local zoo, where she assists the Keepers with the care of many different animals.  On vacations, she loves spending her time swimming with dolphins, especially at her favorite locations in Hawaii.

Kat Greaney, Senior Dog Playgroup Counselor

Kat has always loved animals, big and small.  She grew up with several different pets, including a variety of different breeds of dogs.  She was given a show quality Maltese for her 12th birthday, and she competed in the show ring for 2 years.  Her true passion is animal rescue, and she donates her time and resources by fostering  and grooming animals from several rescue organizations.  She currently fosters cats for Furry Friends Rescue.  She has worked with dogs professionally for over 6 years, starting at age 16 working as a dog bather, and then in 2006 she was trained to become a pet groomer.  She is currently owned by several pets including a 12 year old Maltese named Roxanne, a 7 year old rescue mutt named Liberty, and a 5 year old rescue German Shepherd mix named Lacy.  Her family also includes her 4 personal cats (Angel, Smokey, Lola, and Luna), plus various foster kitties awaiting their forever homes.

Adam Peterson, Overnight dog playgroup manager

An all-star team player at Doggieville, Adam has worked with dogs for over 4 years, and has been a lifetime owner.  Adam and his adopted dog Kira have been a part of the Doggieville team since 2010.  Living in nearby Santa Clara and studying Radiation Therapy at Foothill College, this dog lover plans to continue to foster a happy and safe environment for the dogs he cares so much about.  In his spare time, you might find Adam reading, listening to music, or waxing philosophical.

Lee Brown, Overnight Dog Playgroup Counselor

By the time Lee was 13, her mom had the ASPCA on speed dial.  With a father that trained dogs and a Grandmother who showed cats and dogs, Lee’s love for animals has always been a family affair.  As an adult, Lee ignored her allergies to animals and chose to work with dogs.  Lee has been working with dogs now for 3 years.  Living with 13 reptiles and caring for her 4 year old son, Lee hopes to continue learning and giving her all to Doggieville and its guests.

Kyle Cherevko, Senior Dog Playgroup Counselor

At the age of 10, Kyle got her first dog, a Golden Retriever puppy named Yastrzemski (Yaz for short).  From there, her family grew to include a Shepherd/Husky mix named Thor, and a Pitbull/Shepherd mix named Roxi.  In the past 10 years, Kyle has done dog sitting for many friends and family members while working in the restaurant industry and also going through cosmetology school, thinking that would be the start of a “real” job.  However after graduation, following the passing of Thor, and not too long after the passing of Roxi, she realized that her passion truly lies with dogs.  Currently Kyle is owned by 3 bully breed mixes, Luci, Alabama, and Harley.  When Kyle is not at Doggieville, she is usually doing something with her dogs, whether it be attending dog training class with Our Pack Pitbull Rescue, or hiking with her dog Alabama, or just spending some quality cuddle time on the sofa watching a movie with her pups.  She is also a Dog Socializer at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley.  Kyle is so happy to be a part of the Doggieville family and blessed to be working with others that share her passion for dogs.  The only question she asked herself is “what took so long”?

Jason Huggett, Dog Playgroup Counselor

Jason, who has been a dog and cat owner for most of his life and aspires to have a career involving humanitarian efforts with dogs and other animals, enjoys studying animal behavior, training dogs, and is an avid Bay Area sports fan.  Jason has a Neuroscience and Behavior B.S. from UCSC where he was also captain of the swimming team.  He is getting his pet dog training certification from Animal Behavior College, and he is also starting a nonprofit public charity for dogs. Jason currently owns one dog named Missy and fosters dogs frequently from the Santa Cruz SPCA.

Monica Johnson, Groomer

Originally from the East Coast, Monica has made her way to Doggieville after over 7 years of experience working with animals. Growing up, Monica’s very patient mother let her own a myriad of pets from gerbils and hermit crabs, to ferrets and iguanas (and many more). In 2004 she started out as a bather, and quickly graduated to the position of groomer where she found her niche. She has also fostered dogs for rescue groups, as well as volunteered her grooming services to many groups back on the east coast. Monica actively participated in multiple puppy mill raids, as well as reached out to the community through animal rights activist groups such as ARFF (Animal Rights Foundation of Florida) and Animal Activists of Central Florida. She is very much looking forward to all the new furry West Coast friends she will meet, as well as getting back into fostering rescue pets.
